Chapter 17 Atlanta

Day 5

I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific. Lily Tomlin

Addie packed her things up and left Asheville with Roger and Jacki. She doesn’t know what to expect when they arrive out west, and feels better taking the two with her. A growing feeling speaks to their value, complementing the team David is assembling. An odd crew, that’s for sure, will fill the many voids of this operation of unknowns. Addie is certain the destination will not hold just one man and one woman. After the directors in both shelters resisted awkwardly, and her target was found to have simply not existed, and especially after the garage incident, she believes there is more to the story. They will have to be careful, ready, and willing to confront danger in the days ahead.

Of course, Addie didn’t tell her husband about the operation or her beliefs regarding its risks. She does know one thing – as a pregnant woman in her first trimester, she herself will not be exposed. Running the operation, in the background and not on the front line, will be her domain. David knows this and has relinquished his role of commander to her. He’ll replace her and put himself up front. He also told her he found a .357 in the armory. They’ve become good friends. She knew he’d dig around and find a replacement for her service weapon. Looking into her bag, her empty shoulder holster lays neatly on top of her clothes and toiletries, right where it should be.

Jimmy wanted to take the trip to The Badlands and become part of the Task Force. She didn’t have the heart to tell him he has no value to bring to it. Instead, she fibbed and gave him some story about holding things together, preparing for Madison’s return home. A citizen like himself would just complicate things anyway, with Addie and team needing to ensure his safety. Even though he hails from Texas, full of trigger-happy people running around in an open-carry state, she’s not sure he even knows how to handle a weapon. Roger and Jacki do, however, know their way around pistols. If they didn’t, she’d have to leave them behind, too.

The aircraft they’re in touches down in Atlanta, skipping a few times as regional, small puddle-jumpers do in windy conditions. Carry-ons are all they have and disembarkment is neat, tidy, and quick. The small group is excited, belying the operation before them and the risks it holds. The immediate, first stop is David’s office in the FBI field office. Telling their driver the address in Chamblee, Georgia, Addie settles back beside Jacki, while Roger rides up front. The weather is warm with a hot southern sun overhead, predicting a full, busy day ahead after this morning’s activities, with the team’s assemblages of equipment, deputizing’s, and poring over of maps. David has arranged for a private company plane to whisk them to South Dakota, using the Indian Village Landing Strip.
